Animatic

The video above is the animatic of what our music video will look like and gives the idea of what it is going to look like. I each of the different shots the items of clothing will change to give the impression of it being a different day. The rest of the music will be identical to this what is seen above but with the setting changing and also the props that are used.

Task Five - Pre Production Planning

Proposal
Prepared by
Daniel Cole

I will produce a music video to the song Take A Walk by Passion Pit. This band plays the indietronica genre. For this genre the style of music video can be a wide range as the genre is a mix of rock, pop, indie and electronica. For the music video, we are doing the music video as a person going to different places as though he is taking a walk. For each of the different shots the person will change clothes as though he has been on a walk for a long time and time is passing.

For the music video we will travel to multiple locations and going to  many different locations in order to show that he has been walking long distances. Some locations that we have in mind are London: London Bridge, Southbank, Camden, Museums, Art Galleries and possibly Paris. To keep the music video from becoming boring for some of the shots we will be holding or interacting with someone/something so that it is not the same thing for each of the shots.

Contingency Plan
Name: Daniel Cole

Production: Music Video (Take a Walk)

Potential problems and how to overcome these problems:

Getting lost in Paris/London - we would be able to use maps and GPS on our phones in order to see where we are and how to get to our destinations.

Not being able to find our way to the location could cause us to get behind on our filming schedule - Plan the way in which we will get to our locations with which buses and trains to get.

The battery in the camera running out during the long days of filming - Take more than one battery in order to get as much time filming as possible

If the weather does not permit us to record due to heavy rain or blistering heats - We can check the weather in advanced to know if we will be able to film on the specific days.

Task Four – Analyse the track

Below are the lyrics to Passion Pit's Take a walk, the song which I am looking to create the music video for. Before i am able to create the music video i should first analyse te track so that i know what i should included in the video and also just get an understanding of what the song is about. By getting the meaning of the song and understanding the lyrics this should make it easier for me to know how i want the music video to feel and the shots that would create this feeling.

The story of this song from what i have heard is about someone who s going through some bad times and in order to make it better he decided to take a walk.

The annotations on the lyrics consist of what i feel would go best for that part of song in the music video and also what i think when i read and hear it. The first line is what has provided us with the premise of the music video. 'All these kinds of places' This is the part of the song which we took to make the music video as having a lot of different locations. The next line is 'Makes it seem like it's been ages' and the effect that this has is although there have been so many places that he has seen it makes him feel as though a lot of time has passed whereas in reality it has only been a short time. The next shot is self explanatory and we will look for a shot of standing outside a station trying to sell some flowers.

The line "we were still alone, my wife and I" shows how they were the only ones they knew and had no one else to go to. The next few lines say how he is rarely able to see his family which adds to the previous lines of saying they were alone. After talking about his state of relationships he then goes for a walk.

The song then goes on to reassure himself that even hough there are bad things happening "times could be much worse" and trying to remain positive. He then goes on to explain why he is trying to remain positive by saying he has no money but he doesn't want his wife to go around with no money. He explains how he has children and never wants them to experience what he has with "never feel my strife"

The final verse is how he ended up in the situation that he is in and says how it was bad investments that went wrong and ended up losing all of his money. We know that this has happened in the past because he says about how he "had a lifestyle of fun". The characters in the song have grown older which is talked about when he says they will "make love like they're young" right near the end of the song it says how he has go ten to the end and has resolved to pleading because of what he has been through and happened to him.

The overall message for this song i that he takes a walk in order to clear his mind and escape from his problems.

Task Three – Analyse the artist

The artist that I have chosen is called Passion pit and are a from Cambridge, Massachusetts who formed in 2007. The genre of music that this band plays is indietronica which is a mix between pop, rock, indie and electronic. This bands style is very casual and relaxed, with each of the different band members wearing their own style whilst still keeping it in touch with the style of the band and genre. This is good because it means that to keep it in with the same style of the band then the They do not have any outlining features of clothing that can distinguish them from other artists and bands. This means that, when creating the music video there is no apparel that needs to be shown to keep it in touch with the artist.

Throughout most of their songs the style is calm with sections which are more lively and this reflects to the music video. If we were to keep i touch with the bands music then this means will not have to be very energetic. This means there does not have to be lots of running and jumping in order to keep with the music. A risk however with doing this is that we could make it not as energetic and therefore make it boring so the audience would lose interest.

A website is a good way to get across to the audience who your band is and give across the style of them. The website for Passion Pit is the very clear with clean boxes containing information about them which gives the impression that they are also a clean band with straight forward music. The simplicity of the site makes me feel as though what you see is what you get and there is no complicated story to them and their music can appeal to a lot of people.

Task Two – Choosing the track/gaining permission

Below is the email that I have sent to the record label of Passion Pit asking for their permission to use the song in the music video that we will be creating.

The reason that I am asking the company for permission to use the track is because if i do not then this could have copyright implications as it is not my material to use. By getting permission, this means i would be able to use the music and be able to upload to it to various sites without the risk of it getting removed or getting sent to court over using the music without permission.

Task One – Understanding copyright

When creating a music video you need to be careful as there could be legal implications if you have not followed the procedures and protocols correctly. The first thing that needs to be done is getting the permission to use the music in order to create the music video. There are different people who you are able to get the permission from and this either from the artist that has created the song or the label which the band are signed to. Without this permission if you were to continue and make the music video then you would be breaking copyright laws and could be sent to court but this is a very unlikely outcome as the video is not being used for financial gain in this case. In order to get copyright on a piece of music you do not need to get a legal document but merely need to be able to show that it was your creation. This can make it tricky when finding a song because no matter hat you will need to find the original artist and get permission.

There have been cases in the music industry between artists saying that some of the lyrics or the tune has been copied or changed. This can be trick ground when going to court over copyright charges because the laws are different in different countries which can make it hard to know what is right and what is wrong. In America copyright laws are a legal matter whereas in Britain it is a civil matter which means people have to take others to court with their money.

To overcome these copyright laws there are a few things that can usually be done although in the case of the music most of these would not be able to be applied. The first one is taking a piece of the song or video and referencing it, meaning you say who the original person that made it was although this may not be applicable in this circumstance. Another thing that can be done and which has been done in the music industry is taking someone else's music or video and changing it so that it is unrecognisable. This is a risky move because there have been cases in the music industry where artists have said that another person has copied a part of their song but it is a tricky thing to solve because it is open to opinion.

There has been a recent copyright lawsuit between Robin Thicke and Marvin Gaye. The legal action has been taken  based on similarities between “Blurred Lines” and each of “Got to Give It Up” and “Sexy Ways”. The reason for this court case is to discover whether  could the composers be held liable for copyright infringement if they were influenced and inspired by Marvin Gaye’s and Funkadelic’s prior works
